Quick answer: zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, but only when that wealth has stayed above the nisab for one full lunar year. A zakat calculator does the arithmetic for you. It adds your cash, gold, silver, investments and business assets, subtracts debts that are due now, compares the result with the nisab and shows the amount you owe.
This guide explains how to use a zakat calculator correctly, the formula behind it, and how the rules apply to gold, bank savings, salary, business stock, crypto and mortgages. Every example uses simple numbers so you can follow the method and check your own result. If you want the instant version, open the free online zakat calculator on ToolDeck.
| Zakat rate | 2.5% (one fortieth) of net zakatable wealth |
| Gold nisab | 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) |
| Silver nisab | 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) |
| Holding period (hawl) | One lunar year, about 354 days |
| Who pays | A Muslim who owns wealth at or above the nisab |
| Who receives | The eight categories named in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60) |
| Common payment time | Your personal zakat date, often the first of Ramadan |

Zakat is the obligatory yearly charity of Islam and the third of its five pillars. The word means purification and growth. Giving a fixed share of surplus wealth purifies what remains and lifts people who are struggling. The Quran pairs it with prayer in many verses, for example Surah Al-Baqarah 2:43, which shows how central it is.
People often confuse zakat with other kinds of giving, so it helps to separate them:
| Type | Obligatory? | Amount | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zakat al-Maal (zakat on wealth) | Yes | 2.5% of net zakatable wealth | Once every lunar year |
| Zakat al-Fitr | Yes | A fixed amount per person, set locally | Before the Eid prayer |
| Sadaqah | No (voluntary) | Any amount | Any time |
This article covers zakat al-maal, the wealth tax of Islam, which is what every zakat calculator measures.
Zakat is due from a Muslim who is free, of sound mind and owns zakatable wealth at or above the nisab for a full lunar year. Three simple checks apply:
There is no fixed birthday. Zakat is tied to owning the nisab, and prayer and fasting become obligatory at puberty. Scholars differ on the wealth of children. The Hanafi school says zakat is not due on a child’s property, while most other schools say a guardian should pay zakat from it. If you are unsure about a child’s age or your own, our Age Calculator gives your exact age in years, months and days.
The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth that makes zakat obligatory. It is measured in weight of gold or silver, so its cash value changes every day with metal prices. Any zakat calculator uses this figure as its first check.
| Standard | Grams | Tola | Troy ounces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold nisab | 87.48 g | 7.5 | about 2.81 oz |
| Silver nisab | 612.36 g | 52.5 | about 19.69 oz |
How to find today’s nisab: multiply the grams by the current price of one gram. For example, if silver costs 1.00 per gram in your currency, the silver nisab is 612.36 in that currency. Always use the live price on your zakat date, because a printed figure goes out of date quickly.
Many contemporary scholars and Muslim charities recommend the silver nisab for cash and savings. It is the lower figure, so it brings more wealth into zakat and benefits more people in need. The Hanafi school uses silver as its standard. Other schools use gold for gold and silver for silver. Pick the opinion you follow, apply it consistently, and ask a qualified scholar if your situation is unusual.
The calculation is short. Follow these steps to calculate zakat on your own wealth:
Zakat = (Total zakatable assets − Debts due now) × 0.025, provided the result of the bracket is at or above the nisab.
Anyone can work out zakat with a pen, but a free zakat calculator removes arithmetic mistakes and lets you try different nisab values in seconds.
The figures below are invented to demonstrate the method. They are not today’s market prices. Assume the nisab on the day of calculation works out to 2,000.
| Situation | Working | Zakat due |
|---|---|---|
| Saver: cash 1,500 + bank 6,500 + gold worth 3,000 + shares 2,000, debts due 1,000 | 13,000 − 1,000 = 12,000 × 2.5% | 300 |
| Below nisab: net wealth 1,500 | 1,500 is less than 2,000 | 0 |
| Salary earner who still holds 6,000 in savings on the zakat date | 6,000 × 2.5% | 150 |
| Cash only: 100,000 held for a full lunar year | 100,000 × 2.5% | 2,500 |
A zakat calculator for gold needs only three inputs: the weight of your gold, its purity and today’s price per gram. Gold sold as jewellery is rarely 24 carat, so convert it to pure weight first.
| Purity | Share of pure gold | Pure gold in 100 g |
|---|---|---|
| 24 carat | 100% | 100.00 g |
| 22 carat | 91.67% | 91.67 g |
| 21 carat | 87.50% | 87.50 g |
| 18 carat | 75.00% | 75.00 g |
| 14 carat | 58.33% | 58.33 g |
Worked example:
you own 100 g of 22 carat gold. Pure weight is 100 × 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67 g, which is above the 87.48 g gold nisab. If gold costs 100 per gram in your currency, the value is 9,167 and zakat is 9,167 × 2.5% = 229.17. You may also give zakat in kind, which is 2.5% of 91.67 g, or about 2.29 g of gold.
Does zakat apply to jewellery you wear? Scholars differ. The Hanafi school says yes, because gold and silver are zakatable in any form. Most other schools exempt jewellery worn in a permissible way, but still require zakat on gold held as investment or for resale. Silver follows the same 2.5% rule against the 612.36 g nisab, and silver coins, bars and silverware are all counted by weight.
Money is the simplest asset to measure. Zakat applies to cash in hand, current and savings accounts, fixed deposits, prepaid cards and digital wallets. Use the balance you hold on your zakat date, or, if you prefer a careful method, the lowest balance you kept during the year. Enter the combined figure into the zakat calculator as one line.
Does zakat have to be paid in money? Not always. Zakat on gold can be paid in gold, and zakat on cash is normally paid in cash, but most scholars allow paying the equivalent value if it serves the recipient better.
Is zakat based on income or savings? It is based on savings. Zakat is not charged on the salary the day you receive it. It is charged on the part you still hold when your zakat date arrives, provided your total wealth is above the nisab.
Business:
zakat is due on trade stock, cash and receivables you expect to collect, minus short-term business debts. Value stock at its current selling price, not what you paid. Equipment, shop furniture and machinery used to run the business are not zakatable. A business owner can enter stock value and receivables into a zakat calculator in the same way as personal savings.
Shares and mutual funds:
shares you hold to trade are zakatable at market value. For long-term holdings, many scholars apply zakat to your share of the company’s zakatable assets, and some funds publish a zakat per unit figure.
Crypto:
most contemporary scholars treat cryptocurrency held as an investment like trade goods, so its market value on your zakat date is added to your wealth. Opinions vary, so check with your scholar.
Do you deduct debt from zakat?
Yes. Debts that are due now, such as credit card bills, unpaid rent and overdue loans, reduce your zakatable wealth.
What about a mortgage?
Scholars differ. A commonly followed opinion is to deduct only the instalments due in the next year, not the entire balance. Others allow a larger deduction. Ask your scholar before you decide.
Do taxes count as zakat?
No. Zakat is an act of worship with its own intention and its own recipients, so income tax or other taxes paid to the government do not replace it. Tax that is due and unpaid can be treated as a debt in your calculation. Zakat is calculated on your wealth, not on your income before or after tax.
Before you open a zakat calculator, sort your assets using this table.
| Asset | Zakatable? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cash and bank balances | Yes | Include all accounts |
| Gold and silver (bars, coins) | Yes | By weight and purity |
| Jewellery | Depends on school | Hanafi: yes. Others: exempt if worn |
| Business stock | Yes | At selling price |
| Shares and funds held to trade | Yes | At market value |
| Cryptocurrency held as investment | Yes (most scholars) | At market value |
| Money owed to you | Yes | If you expect to be repaid |
| Rental income you saved | Yes | The saved cash, not the building |
| Your own home | No | Personal use |
| Car, clothes, furniture | No | Personal use |
| Property bought to resell | Yes | At current market value |
Livestock has its own nisab when animals graze freely on open pasture for most of the year. Animals bought and sold as stock are treated as trade goods and use the normal 2.5% rule.
| Animal | Minimum number | Zakat due |
|---|---|---|
| Camels | 5 | One sheep or goat |
| Cows and buffalo | 30 | One calf aged one year |
| Sheep and goats | 40 | One sheep or goat |
Larger herds follow a detailed schedule in the books of fiqh, so owners should consult a scholar for exact numbers.
Once you know your net zakatable wealth, the amount is a simple 2.5%. Use this table as a quick reference. It assumes the wealth is above the nisab and held for a lunar year. The table is a shortcut, but a zakat calculator also checks the nisab for you.
| Net zakatable wealth | Zakat at 2.5% |
|---|---|
| 10,000 | 250 |
| 50,000 | 1,250 |
| 100,000 (1 lakh) | 2,500 |
| 500,000 | 12,500 |
| 1,000,000 | 25,000 |
So zakat on 1 lakh is 2,500, but only if your total net wealth is at or above the nisab. A person who owns only 1 lakh and whose nisab is higher owes nothing.
Zakat is paid once every lunar year. Your hawl begins on the day your wealth first reaches the nisab. Most people choose one fixed date, often the first of Ramadan, and calculate everything on that day. The lunar year is about 354 days, so a Gregorian date drifts by roughly eleven days each year.
Ramadan 2027 is expected in February 2027, depending on moon sighting, so start collecting your records early and set a reminder to run your zakat calculator again on the same date every lunar year.
| Country | Currency | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| United States | USD | Use the local gold or silver price per gram or ounce |
| United Kingdom | GBP | Use the live price per gram in pounds |
| Canada | CAD | Convert metal prices to Canadian dollars |
| India | INR | Gold is often quoted per 10 g, and 1 lakh equals 100,000 |
| Bangladesh | BDT (taka) | One bhori equals 11.664 g, the same as one tola |
| Pakistan | PKR | Banks may deduct zakat from eligible accounts on the first of Ramadan unless you have filed an exemption, so check current rules to avoid paying twice |
| Malaysia | MYR | State zakat institutions collect zakat and publish their own guidance |
| Saudi Arabia and UAE | SAR, AED | Use local gold and silver rates in riyal or dirham |
Whatever the country, the formula stays the same, so any zakat calculator only needs your local currency and the current metal price.
Surah At-Tawbah 9:60 lists eight categories of recipients:
| Category | Meaning |
|---|---|
| The poor (fuqara) | People with very little or no income |
| The needy (masakin) | People whose income does not cover basic needs |
| Zakat administrators | Those appointed to collect and distribute zakat |
| Hearts to be reconciled | New Muslims and those whose support benefits the community |
| Freeing captives | Releasing people from bondage or unjust captivity |
| Debtors | People weighed down by lawful debts they cannot repay |
| In the way of Allah | Causes recognised by scholars as serving the religion |
| Stranded travellers | Travellers who have run out of means |
You cannot give zakat to your own parents, grandparents, children or spouse, because you are already responsible for supporting them. Wealthy people who meet the nisab are also not eligible.

Zakat is simple once you know the pieces: a lunar year, a nisab, a list of zakatable assets and a rate of 2.5%. Gather your records, pick your zakat date, and run the numbers with a trusted zakat calculator. Then give the amount to eligible recipients with a sincere intention.
This article is educational and does not replace a fatwa. Rulings on jewellery, mortgages, shares and children’s wealth vary between schools, so consult a qualified scholar for your own situation.
A zakat calculator is an online tool that adds your zakatable assets, subtracts debts due now, checks the total against the nisab and applies the 2.5% rate to show how much zakat you owe.
Add all cash and bank balances on your zakat date, subtract debts due now, confirm the result is above the nisab, then multiply by 0.025.
The rate is 2.5% of net zakatable wealth, which equals one fortieth.
Convert your gold to pure weight, check it against 87.48 g, multiply by the current price per gram, and take 2.5% of the value. You can also give 2.5% of the weight in gold.
On savings. Salary is only counted for what you still hold on your zakat date.
It is 2,500, provided your net wealth is above the nisab and you have held it for a lunar year.
No. Your home, car, clothes and household items are for personal use and are not zakatable.
